How would you recommend that I determine if I purchased any bags that may not have contained the correct amount of product? That is how do you recommend I measure the volume?
Bag weight is not the best measure to ensure the correct amount of product is in each bag. We do have to put an average weight on the bag for registration purposes, but we measure the volume to ensure correct fill. Weight of organic materials is greatly affected by moisture content. Depending on where the individual bags were stored before or after your purchase, some of the bags could have experienced some dry down, while others may have absorbed some of the surrounding moisture. For example, if these bags were stored on a pallet, the bags on the outside of the pallet would dry down over time, while the bags on the inside would retain their original moisture content longer.
That being said, measuring the volume of a few bags in a home environment can be quite tricky. We have specialized equipment that can precisely measure each bag. If you're up to the challenge, I have attached a PDF handout that can walk you through the process. You should look at section 3.10 on page 24 of the document. Again, it can be quite tricky and we do recommend fluffing each bag evenly before measuring to ensure none of the material has been compressed in storage. You can do this with your hands or by gently rolling the bag on the ground.
